In December, a dear friend of mine sent me a link that another friend had brought to her attention. It was a link to The Sketchbook Project. She thought I would be perfect for this and her encouragement made me curious and excited. So, I checked it out and discovered that the Art House Co-op was sponsoring The Sketchbook Project 2012, a project that was open to anyone in the world up to 5,000 artists. Simply put, you pay a small fee to receive your sketchbook in the mail. It is approximately 5″x7″ and contains moleskin pages. You can sketch, paint, collage, rubber stamp or otherwise be creative with your pages. You can even rebind your sketchbook to add different papers and/or a different cover, however, your sketchbook must remain the 5″x7″ and be no more than 1″ thick.
You can choose a theme offered by the project to loosely work with. When you are done with your sketchbook you mail it back to the Art House Co-op housed in the Brooklyn Art Library. Each sketchbook is catalogued and placed in the collection at the Museum for anyone to check out and peruse. The entire collection goes on tour for many months before it is given its permanent home in the Brooklyn Art Library. Furthermore, a Limited Edition series of books are published containing at least one spread from every sketchbook submitted to the project.
In addition to having your sketchbook in the library, you can choose to pay additional fees to have your sketchbook professionally digitized and housed on the Art House community website for others to view online. You can also purchase, in advance, a copy of the Limited Edition book that contains your sketchbook spread.
This project is an annual event. For the 2012 edition, sign ups must be made by January 31, 2012 and sketchbooks must be completed and returned by April 30, 2012.
And now that my introduction is complete, please take a moment to look at my Sketchbook Posts to follow my progress on this exciting project!
